Announcing Rivals United

Dear Darien Soccer players and families,

Darien Soccer Association and New Canaan FC today announce that we are collaborating to create a top-level premier soccer program for our players.  Rivals United, a joint premier program, will commence play in the 2019/2020 season initially for the U15 girls and boys, with other age groups added based on demand.  The long-term plan is to offer teams at U12-U15.  All age appropriate Darien and New Canaan residents will be eligible to try out.  The intent is to provide an opportunity for players to experience premier level programming and competition combined with the affordability, convenience and flexibility of playing at a local level.  Importantly, Darien SA and New Canaan FC will continue to offer their full range of traditional programs including multiple travel teams at each age group.

Mike Moore, President of Darien SA said “We are excited to offer a top premier experience and pathway while promoting the community spirit and rivalry that is lost in today’s premier landscape.”

Krista Tully, President of New Canaan FC added, “We are confident that this combined offering will resonate with many players who are multi-sport athletes and allow them to further develop as soccer players, which is a positive for both the players and the respective high school programs.”

Parent/Player Information Session

The program launch will include a parent and player information session at 7pm on March 28thheld at the Lapham Center in Waveny Park, directions below:

Registration for this Fall 2019 program will begin the next day with tryouts held in Late April/Early May.

DSA Donation to Chigoli Academy in Malawi

DSA kit donation to Chigoli

DSA Alum Aidan Murphy and his father, DSA Board member Tom Murphy, recently returned from Malawi in Southeast Africa where Aidan had travelled as part of a 19-day Woza Soccer service trip.  Home base for the Woza trip was Chigoli Academy, a football academy that provides life-changing opportunities — through educational scholarships, extremely high quality football training, character development and nutrition — to boys and girls in Malawi.  A highlight of their trip was being able to donate DSA soccer kits to the boys and girls at the academy.  The players were most appreciative and sang and danced a very special thank you to DSA that you can view here.  https://youtu.be/xanmSavov8k.

Another highlight for Aidan and Tom was being able to meet Zobran Elias, a special young boy who is coming to the US later in August to attend Indian Mountain School where he will enter the 9th grade.   This is front-page news in Malawi’s capital city.  Zobran will be spending a lot of time in Darien as the Murphys will be his host family while he is in the US.

Chigoli is doing some wonderful work in Malawi in many ways and through soccer is transforming the lives of some of the world’s poorest children. This newsletter has a few of their highlights from July. https://mailchi.mp/chigoli/4jubzpmefp-1640113?e=c6a2d491d5.  And this video offers a glimpse into their vision for the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4QRaSFTwBI

Chigoli’s founder, George Maguire, will be visiting the US this fall and the Murphys will be co-hosting an event for him to introduce the academy to a broader audience at the Yale Club in NYC on Thursday, October 11.  We would welcome the support of the DSA Community.  If you are interested in attending and/or simply learning more about Chigoli, please reach out to Tom at  .
